What If – Episode 2
The wizarding world we know is shaped by choices, prophecies, and fate—but what if things had turned out differently?
In LumosLore’s What If series, we dive into alternate timelines, reimagining how small changes could have rewritten the story of Harry Potter forever.
Destiny hinged on a single choice Voldemort made: to see Harry as the Chosen One. But the prophecy could have applied to Neville as well. What if Voldemort had chosen differently? Would Neville have been able to rise to the challenge? Let’s step into an alternate timeline where Neville, not Harry, was the boy who lived.
1. The Prophecy & Voldemort’s Choice
The prophecy spoke of a boy born at the end of July, to parents who had defied Voldemort three times. Both Harry Potter and Neville fit the description. Voldemort’s decision to target Harry shaped history—but if he had attacked the Longbottoms, everything would have changed.
2. Neville’s Childhood as the “Boy Who Lived”
-
Neville would have been raised by his grandmother after the fall of his parents.
-
Unlike Harry, who grew up unloved by the Dursleys, Neville would have had affection—but also enormous expectations.
-
The weight of fame might have made him anxious, but it could have fueled his determination to live up to his family’s legacy.
3. Hogwarts & A Different Trio
-
Sorting: Neville would likely still be a Gryffindor, though the Sorting Hat might have considered Hufflepuff for his loyalty and perseverance.
-
Friends: Without Harry’s fame, the trio could have been Neville, Hermione, and Ron.
-
Rivalries: Malfoy might not have obsessed over Harry, instead aiming his taunts at Neville, the boy who lived.
4. Neville vs. Voldemort
-
Neville’s slow start with magic could have turned into focused training much earlier.
-
His Herbology expertise could have been vital—imagine him using magical plants in battles against Death Eaters.
-
In the final battle, it might have been Neville, not Harry, who drew Gryffindor’s sword and struck down Nagini, sealing Voldemort’s fate.
5. Harry’s Life in the Shadows
-
Without the prophecy, Harry might have grown up as an ordinary wizard, perhaps excelling in Quidditch.
-
He could still have formed friendships with Ron and Hermione, though destiny wouldn’t have placed him at the story’s center.
-
In this world, Harry may have watched Neville shoulder the burden of the prophecy.
Whether Harry or Neville, both boys had the heart of a Gryffindor. Rowling’s story reminds us that greatness lies not in destiny but in choice. Neville’s journey proves that even without the prophecy, he dared to become a true hero.
In another universe, Neville Longbottom might have been the wizard who defeated Voldemort. And while Harry Potter carried the prophecy in our story, Neville’s bravery ensured that the wizarding world always had another hero waiting in the wings.
