What If – Episode 1
The Sorting Hat’s voice still rings in our ears: “You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head. And Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness…”
Now imagine for a moment that Harry had agreed. Picture him walking across the Great Hall, sitting down at the Slytherin table, and putting on those green and silver colors. The entire story we know might have unfolded in a completely different way.
🧢 The Sorting Hat’s Choice
In the books, the Hat came very close to sending Harry to Slytherin. Harry’s ambition, resourcefulness, and leadership skills matched the House perfectly. But Harry begged to be placed in Gryffindor, and the Hat listened.
If he hadn’t, Harry would have started Hogwarts as a Slytherin first year. Right away, Gryffindors like Ron would have been suspicious. Draco might have tried to pull him into his circle, and Hermione may have been much slower to warm up to him.
🐍 Early Years in Slytherin
With Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and Blaise Zabini as dorm mates, Harry’s first year would have looked very different. Draco probably would have welcomed him at first, proud to have Harry Potter by his side. But over time, rivalry could have grown as both boys fought for attention and influence.
Even Snape might have treated Harry differently. Yes, he still looks like James, but being in Slytherin could have softened Snape’s attitude. Harry might have earned at least some respect much earlier.
⚖️ Shifting Alliances
This version of Harry’s story changes a lot about his friendships.
-
Ron’s instant bond with Harry on the train may never have happened. Instead, they might have become rivals in their separate Houses.
-
Hermione might still have connected with Harry, but it would have taken longer and required more effort.
-
Dumbledore would still keep a close eye on Harry, but the boy being in Slytherin could have made him more cautious.
🔮 The Chosen One in Green and Silver
The prophecy would still stand, no matter what House Harry belonged to. But the wizarding world would see it differently. The hero destined to defeat Voldemort being in the same House that produced him would raise eyebrows everywhere.
Voldemort himself might have tried harder to recruit Harry, hoping to win him over. Or maybe Harry would have reshaped Slytherin’s reputation by proving that ambition and power can be used for good.
⚔️ A Different Final Battle
At the Battle of Hogwarts, everything might have felt different too.
-
A Slytherin Harry could have united his House, showing that courage and ambition are not opposites.
-
Or he might have been caught between both sides, never fully trusted by Gryffindor or Slytherin.
Either way, the story would have been less about Gryffindor’s bravery and more about Slytherin’s redemption.
✨ Final Thoughts
The Harry Potter series demonstrates how one choice can alter everything. Harry’s asking to be in Gryffindor gave us the story we love. But if he had been placed in Slytherin, we would have had a completely new timeline to explore.
Would he have become darker and more dangerous? Or would he have been the one to redeem Slytherin’s name finally?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you picture a Slytherin Harry? Share your version in the comments, and don’t forget to follow along for more “What If” scenarios in our LumosLore series.
